Erin Patterson Case: Unsealed Files Reveal Husband’s Prior Poisoning Claims Ahead of Sentencing

New details have emerged in the high-profile case of Erin Patterson, the Australian woman recently convicted of killing her in-laws with a toxic mushroom meal. Freshly unsealed court documents reveal her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, had previously alleged she attempted to poison him on multiple occasions before the fatal July 2023 lunch.
Patterson, 50, was found guilty last month of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after serving a beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms, which led to the deaths of her husband’s parents and aunt, and the severe illness of his uncle. While the jury heard extensive testimony, they were not privy to Simon Patterson’s claims that his wife had also poisoned him in 2021 and 2022.
According to the newly released evidence, unsealed after a gag order was lifted, Simon described three harrowing instances where he became gravely ill after eating food prepared by Erin. These included a pasta bolognese, a chicken korma curry that led to a coma and partial bowel removal, and a vegetable wrap. He testified that doctors could not determine the cause of his illnesses, but he grew suspicious of Erin, even declining the fatal July 2023 lunch because he feared she might poison him.
Prosecutors had initially filed additional attempted murder charges against Erin Patterson related to these alleged incidents, but they were inexplicably dropped just before her murder trial began in April. Simon Patterson alluded to these dropped charges during the trial when the jury was not present, expressing his difficulty with the legal process.
The revelations come as Erin Patterson faces a maximum penalty of life in prison for her convictions. Her two-day sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025, where numerous victim impact statements are expected. Patterson’s legal team has indicated they will appeal her convictions.
