Sony’s Xperia smartphone brand, despite its minimal global market share, has received a renewed commitment from the company’s leadership. During Sony’s latest financial results presentation this week, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao declared the Xperia business to be “a very important business for us.”

Tao highlighted that “communication technology is a very important technology that Sony has cultivated for a long time,” adding that the company intends to “continue to value our smartphone business.” This reaffirmation comes amidst a backdrop of persistent reports suggesting Sony is reducing its smartphone efforts in Europe, has largely exited the US market, and earlier this year ceased manufacturing its own devices. Despite these significant market challenges and a shrinking footprint, Sony continues to publicly stand by its Xperia smartphone division.
