Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared Israel’s intention to take complete control of the Gaza Strip, a statement made ahead of a critical security cabinet meeting where top ministers are currently deciding on the highly controversial move. Speaking in a recent interview, Netanyahu affirmed this objective, citing the need to ensure Israel’s security, dismantle Hamas, and facilitate civilian governance free from the militant group.

The declaration has immediately drawn sharp international condemnation and warnings. The United Nations cautioned that a full military takeover would risk “catastrophic consequences” for Palestinian civilians and remaining Israeli hostages. The UK’s ambassador to Israel echoed these concerns, calling such a move “a huge mistake.” Hamas, in response, accused Netanyahu of pursuing a path of “genocide and displacement,” suggesting his plan would sacrifice hostages and derail ongoing negotiations.

While Israeli media reports indicate Netanyahu views this as the sole path to destroying Hamas and freeing hostages following a breakdown in ceasefire talks, there are reported disagreements within Israel’s military leadership and government. Israel currently controls approximately three-quarters of Gaza. A full takeover, which some reports suggest could initially focus on Gaza City and involve relocating its one million residents, would likely displace many more of Gaza’s already war-affected population.
