Paul G. Mahoney Set to Assume Interim Presidency at UVA on August 11

Paul G. Mahoney is officially set to begin his tenure as interim president of the University of Virginia on August 11. The Board of Visitors recently announced Mahoney’s selection, tapping the distinguished professor and former dean of the School of Law to guide the institution during its search for a permanent leader.
The decision followed an extensive search process where the board gathered input from the UVA community, prioritizing candidates with strong academic credentials, proven leadership within the university, and an ability to foster trust across diverse stakeholders.
Board Rector Rachel Sheridan emphasized Mahoney’s deep connection to the University and his extensive achievements, stating, “We are confident that Paul’s longstanding connection to the University as a faculty member and dean of the Law School, as well as his extensive achievements as a lawyer, professor and public servant, make him the right leader to guide this institution as the search for a 10th UVA president gets underway.” Sheridan also acknowledged Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis for her steady leadership as acting president since Jim Ryan’s resignation in June.
Mahoney brings a wealth of experience, having served on the Law School faculty since 1990 and as its dean from 2008-2016. His distinguished career includes roles with the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a past position on the Investor Advisory Committee of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Before his tenure at UVA, he practiced law and clerked for prominent judges, including Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Expressing his gratitude, Mahoney stated, “I am honored and humbled to serve as the interim president of the University of Virginia and to support the extraordinary students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents who make this institution great.” He affirmed his commitment to UVA’s core values and its mission in education, research, and patient care.
Leaders across the University, including Darden School of Business Dean Scott Beardsley and Law School Dean Leslie Kendrick, lauded Mahoney’s appointment. Beardsley praised him as a “strong, thoughtful leader” with a “keen legal mind,” while Kendrick highlighted his successful navigation of the Law School through the 2008 financial crisis, stating he brought the institution out “stronger than ever.”
As interim president, Mahoney will wield the full authority of the office, tasked with ensuring the University operates smoothly while the comprehensive search for its 10th permanent president proceeds.
