Deadly Train Derailment in Southern Germany: Three Confirmed Dead, Investigation Underway

A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany yesterday, Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least three people and injuring at least 34 others, some seriously. The incident occurred in a forested area between Riedlingen and Munderkingen, approximately 158 kilometres west of Munich, with around 100 people on board.
Rescue operations, including searches with dogs, continued through the night to locate any missing passengers. Authorities anticipate bringing in cranes today, Monday, to lift the derailed carriages as recovery efforts intensify.
Federal and local police have launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash. Initial inquiries are focusing on whether heavy storms that hit the region prior to the derailment, potentially causing a landslide, played a role. Thomas Strobl, Interior Minister of Baden-Württemberg, stated that heavy rain and related landslides cannot be ruled out as a cause.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, while Deutsche Bahn, the national railway operator, confirmed its cooperation with investigators and offered its sympathies.
