Allianz Life Confirms Major Data Breach Affecting Millions of North American Customers
Insurance giant Allianz Life has confirmed a significant cyber-attack that has compromised the personal information of a majority of its 1.4 million North American customers. The German parent company disclosed that the breach, which occurred on July 16, 2025, targeted a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America.
According to a statement provided to the BBC and a legal filing with the Maine Attorney General, a malicious threat actor employed a social engineering technique to gain unauthorized access. This allowed them to obtain personally identifiable data belonging to most Allianz Life customers, financial professionals, and a selection of Allianz Life employees.
Allianz Life has stated it took immediate action to contain the breach and has notified the FBI. The company emphasized that there is no evidence its main network or other company systems, including its policy administration system, were accessed. The incident is isolated to Allianz Life, and the company is actively in the process of contacting and assisting the individuals affected by the data compromise.
Social engineering is a deceptive cyber-attack method where hackers manipulate individuals, often by impersonating trusted entities, to trick them into revealing sensitive information.
