With Palestinians in Gaza facing an escalating risk of famine and increasing deaths from malnutrition-related causes, hundreds of truckloads of vital aid remain stalled at the border, igniting a fierce blame game between Israel and the United Nations.

Israel asserts that abundant aid is awaiting distribution at the Kerem Shalom crossing, having allowed approximately 4,500 aid trucks since May. However, the UN contends that delivery is severely hampered by Israeli military restrictions, unsafe routes, bureaucratic delays, and a critical breakdown of law and order within Gaza. Recent reports indicate that over 79 Palestinians were killed this week while attempting to access aid, underscoring the perilous conditions.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over half of its movement requests—506 out of 894—were denied or impeded by Israeli forces in May, June, and July. Routes often deemed unsuitable or dangerous are assigned, and vital coordination is frequently delayed. While Israel claims no limits on aid entry and offers escorts, the UN cites safety concerns for civilians if accompanied by the military and stresses that consistent, high-volume aid flow is the ultimate solution to curb looting and ensure community buy-in.
