The viral dating advice app ‘Tea,’ which recently soared to the top of the US Apple App Store, is reeling from a significant data breach that exposed approximately 72,000 user images, including sensitive selfies and identity verification photos.

The incident was identified at 6:44 AM PST on Friday, July 25th, when ‘Tea’ detected unauthorized access to one of its systems. A company spokesperson confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the breach affected a legacy data storage system containing information from over two years ago.

Among the compromised data are about 13,000 selfies and photo identifications submitted during account verification, alongside 59,000 in-app images, comments, and direct messages. The breach was first reported by 404 Media, which found the exposed data posted on 4chan.

‘Tea’ has stated it is working with third-party cybersecurity experts and believes current or additional user data remains unaffected. The company’s administrative account, ‘TaraTeaAdmin,’ notified users about the breach within the app, sparking hundreds of comments. This breach intensifies privacy concerns for the app, which had already faced scrutiny regarding the privacy of men posted on the platform, now extending to its female users.
