The Trump administration announced Friday it is releasing approximately $6 billion in education funding that had been previously withheld, a move set to provide a crucial financial boost to states as the new school year approaches. The U.S. Department of Education confirmed the funds, which include critical programming for English language acquisition, teacher development, and adult education, will begin distribution the week of Monday, July 28, 2025.

This decision comes after the administration had frozen the congressionally authorized funding earlier this month, citing a review to determine if programs “grossly misused” government funds or promoted a “radical leftwing agenda.” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon had previously indicated a potential release by year-end, making Friday’s announcement earlier than expected.

Advocacy groups, including Democracy Forward and the National Parents Union, have widely applauded the release, hailing it as a significant victory for public education. Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, which had challenged the freeze in court, called it a “major victory,” while National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues celebrated a “hard-earned win.”

Despite the immediate relief, concerns persist regarding future funding. Montserrat Garibay of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) highlighted that the proposed “skinny budget” for FY26 eliminates Title III funding, which supports English learners. “The funding for Title III means that our most precious assets and the future of our country will receive the services they need to thrive,” Garibay stated, emphasizing the ongoing fight for next year’s budget.

The announcement follows a week after the administration unfroze over $1 billion in after-school and summer learning funds. While the exact timeline for states to receive the additional $6 billion remains unclear, its release is timely as many districts nationwide are preparing for the start of the school year.
